Finnish!

Well, let me be the first to say, I've had ease with languages in the past. That being said, I think the only thing that could've prepared me for learning (a term loosely used) Finnish would probably either been skydiving without a parachute or being burned alive by talking demon snakes who make bad puns. Seriously, there are like ZERO cognates (for those of you who might need a refresh on what a cognate is, it's a word that sounds or looks similar across languages, like 'pessimist' in English is 'pessimiste' in French (yeah, I get the irony of the word choice and the bad taste of double parentheticals, oh well)). Even so, I've been able to learn some stuff. Here's like all I know.

Moi! Nimeni on Vanhin Hancock, ja olen lähetyssaarnaaja Myöhempien Aikojen Pyhien Jeesuksen Kristuksen Kirkko. Kirkko on hauska. Kuten myös, Mormonin Kirja on hauska. Entä sinä? Mitä on sinä nimen?

That's all I got. Plug it into Translate and it sorta makes sense, although I'll need to find a better adjective to describe the Church and the Book of Mormon than 'fun'.

Brother Smith from across the street (who served in Helsinki) is coming over tonight to talk about the mission, so that'll be good! I also found out that I'll fly out two days before the 100th anniversary of Finland, so that's also pretty awesome.

Nähdään myöhemmin!

You are assigned to labor in the... Finland Helsinki Mission!!!

Hey everyone!

Yesterday I received my mission call. I'm so excited to serve the children of the Lord in the beautiful country of Finland. I hope to be able to well relay my experiences with you. I'll use this blog to give updates on my mission preparation and then pass it on to my parents to publish my group emails after I enter the MTC. The important stuff: I'm serving in Helsinki, Finland; I'm speaking Finnish; I report to the Provo MTC on 4 October 2017; and I can't wait to go. :)

Until next time, hyvää päivänjatkoa! (That means 'have a good day'. It's one of about three phrases I know so far.)

Veli Hancock

(Veli means Brother, by the way, and Vanhin means Elder. So for now, we're sticking with Veli)
